This is a very beautifully executed watercolour of a river in North Wales, (with solitary fisherman) by listed artist, George Henry Downing. He was born in 1878 in Portsmouth and focused on watercolour landscapes for most of his career. He was also an art teacher, lecturer and writer. Signed by the artist lower right and entitled Autumn Evening, North Wales lower left. The piece is not dated but is likely to be late 19th/early 20th century. Downing was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, from 1921 and he later founded the Portsmouth and Hampshire Art Society. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940.
