I am pleased to offer an early 17th century rendition of famous Royal sitter King Charles I in an identical pose after Sir Peter Lely’s original of 1647 in which the King is painted alongside his son James Duke Of York 1633-1701. Our portrait is a reduced version circle of Lely after the last original which was was known to have been painted during King Charles internment at Hampton Court Palace. This would have been Artist Sir Peter Lely’s first commission when arriving in England and depicted the King as he appeared at the end of his life. As an early work, the influence of Van Dyke is apparent in Lely’s depiction which makes this portrait a desirable work of art to acquire. About King Charles 1ST Charles I (19 November 1600 – 30 January 1649 was monarch of the three kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution in 1649. Charles was the second son of King James Vi of Scotland, but after his father inherited the English throne in 1603, he moved to England, where he spent much of the rest of his life. He became heir apparent to the English, Irish and Scottish thrones on the death of his elder brother, Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1612. An unsuccessful and unpopular attempt to marry him to a Spanish Habsburg princess culminated in an eight-month visit to Spain in 1623 that demonstrated the futility of the marriage negotiations. Two years later he married the Bourbon princess Henrietta Maria of France instead.
